Charlie Puth stopped by The Tonight Show to perform his recent single “Changes” with the help of a live band and a group of backup singers. The nostalgic, piano-led tune comes off Puth’s forthcoming LP, Whatever’s Clever!, which drops next year.
Whatever’s Clever! is set to arrive on March 6, 2026, via Atlantic Records. Puth co-produced the album with BloodPop, best known for his work with Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, and more. It marks the singer-songwriter’s fourth album and first since 2022’s Charlie. While “Changes” will definitely appear on the record, a full track list hasn’t been revealed yet, so it’s unclear if the album will also feature some of Puth’s other singles from the past few years, including “That’s Not How This Works,” “Lipstick,” and “Hero.”
Puth sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss the album, as well as announcing becoming a father in the “Changes” music video and his “Professor Puth” TikTok series.
“I didn’t leave much up to the imagination there,” Puth noted of the video. ” But yeah, we’re expecting a baby in March. I’m gonna be a dad. I was told not to reveal the gender.” He added, “I hope baby likes music, because it’s the only thing I’m good at.”
The musician teased the album, noting that the title is misleading. “None of these songs are clever,” he said. “They’re real. And I think by me naming the album ‘Whatever’s Clever,’ to get really artist-y here, was a way to say goodbye to a former way of thinking about, like, ‘Oh every song on this has to be perfect for radio. This has to be perfect for X, Y, and Z.’ It’s really songs for me and it’s very therapeutic making this album.”
Elsewhere on the late-night show, Puth participated in a skit with Fallon where the duo played live-steamers on a fake show called “Hundred Percent.” Puth played a wig-clad character named Zayden Brixby, who discussed slang and memes with his pal Tadley Childers.
