Karol G brought the party to all la salas of her global fanbase when she presented the Tropicoqueta visual album with the “La Premiere” broadcast special.
“La Premiere” came out on local channels at the same time across 40 countries, including the U.S., Karol’s native Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Uruguay, Guatemala, and more. As fans worldwide crowded around their televisions, Karol delivered a mega-production worthy of the appointment viewing.
Produced by Karol’s Bichota Films, the special was introduced by none other than Univision’s Don Francisco, and featured exclusive performances of 12 Tropicoqueta tracks like “Latina Foreva,” “Papasito”, and “Dile Luna.” The reimagined tracks were filmed in multiple locations across Mexico City, Los Angeles, Cartagena, and Medellín. “I’ve been working on it since March, recording in different places around the world where it’s kind of a movie,” Karol told Rolling Stone when talking about the visual album.
Karol made “La Premiere” extra special by incorporating the premiere of the official music video for the Pharrell-produced “Ivonny Bonita.” Directed by Carolina Giraldo, Pedro Artola, and STILLZ, the visual finds Karol twisting around in the dirt of a dark, mystical forest before she physically breaks free from the chains that bind her, and unleashes her fiery side (literally). “I believe we all have our own version of [Ivonny], a force that rises when everything else falls apart, a small light that reminds us who we truly are,” Karol said during the broadcast. “Today, I want you to celebrate yours. Embrace her, listen to her, recognize her, applaud her,” she added.
The Latin star was joined by Marco Antonio Solis for an evocative performance of their sweet collaboration “Coleccionando Heridas.” Filmed at the iconic Estudios Churubusco in Mexico City, more than 200 fans watched as Solis and Karol impassioned performance. Other musicians like Mariah Angeliq and Eddy Lover were also brought on to perform their Tropicoqueta collaborations, “FKN Movie” and “Dile Luna.”
Karol also made a point to put her passionate fans front and center in “La Premiere.” An acoustic rendition of the reggaeton track “Tu Perfume” was filmed at the historic Pueblito Paisa in Medellín, where a packed plaza was surprised by a pop-up Karol performance. Fans sang their hearts out as they surrounded Karol in a circle.
The massive production is a part of Karol’s strong visual vision for Tropicoqueta. Since its release in June, the Latin singer has leaned heavily into the visuals of the project with an album trailer in the style of a telenovela and equally spectacular music videos for “Latina Foreva” and “Papasito”
“After a year of building this universe… The time has come to show you what Tropicoqueta, my album, looks like, in energy, in images, in my head,” Karol wrote in an Instagram post days before La Premiere. She went on to explain that the broadcast was “born out of a personal dream… back to see families reunited, celebrating, feeling, dancing, all together in front of the TV in the living room of the house… Like old times.”
