Light Grey are just the newest band to join the pop-punk renascence with all-new album Nightmares – which is out now!
With a touch of emo, Light Grey embrace the classic sound of pop punk with Nightmares. The album contains 11 tracks of emotional stories, portrayed with mostly up-beat, fast music. It’s semi-autobiographic but follows a concept where a character travelling through a dream towards a nightmare.
The album fades in with Famous. A twinkly sounding track, introducing us to an upbeat sound, with catchy lyrics. The emotion stays for a couple of tracks, but quickly switches for Loser.
This is the first obvious sign of distress within the album’s mood, and one of the stronger songs. Immediately, you’re met with a grittier sound, it’s slower and angrier.
Losing Sleep is the next track that stood out to me, fading in with atmospheric sounds. It has a soft verse, portraying calmness before kicking into the chorus. The chorus really hit me, it had me bobbing my head along and almost dancing. I can imagine this song being incredible to hear live.
Losing Sleep is possibly my favourite on the album, but I did enjoy Square One as well. The soft acoustic sound took me back to my days on Tumblr, the calm nostalgia of the sound alone was comforting. The lyrics are poetic, portraying the anxiety that you feel when you struggle to heal. With a little breakdown towards the end, the emotion of the song hit hard. Finally, the song wraps up and fades out nicely with Nightmares.
Light Grey have done a really good job with this album. Nightmares is one for fans of classic emo and pop punk music, and it’s out now!
