Fiona Apple Releases New Cover of Don Heffington’s “Lately”: Listen


Fiona Apple has shared a new cover song. Her rendition of “Lately” appears on Tonight I’ll Go Down Swingin’, a tribute album dedicated to the late drummer and singer-songwriter Don Heffington. John C. Reilly, Jackson Browne, and more guest on the record, too, which is out now via Nine Mile Records and Clover Music Group. Don Heffington was a regular at Largo, the Los Angeles club that Fiona Apple enshrined with a bonus track on her 2012 album, The Idler Wheel…. Heffington died in March 2021, at age 70, of complications from leukemia. “Lately” served as the closing song on the final solo studio album of his lifetime, 2016’s Contemporary Abstractions in Folk Song and Dance.
