Lauren Alaina wrote a song about an ex-boyfriend and shared it with her husband. His response is the reason we’re all here today.
Cameron Arnold married Alaina in February 2024 after a year-and-a-half engagement. The singer tells Taste of Country that co-writer Ben Johnson brought her the hook before their writing appointment, and it came together quickly after that.
“I wrote the first verse on the way to the writing session, which was kind of crazy,” she tells Evan Paul.
The real-life story of the song happened several years before Arnold introduced himself. She says she and a then-boyfriend had a big fight on Nashville’s Lower Broadway one night. “All My Exes” is a flirty note to an ex, but that didn’t bother her hubs.
“It’s my husband’s favorite. He is the reason this song is out in the world,” she shouts.
- Jimmy Gutch and Whitney Phillips are the other two co-writers on “All My Exes.”
- The song was written and partially recorded one year before the singer shared it with Chase Matthew.
- These two singers met on Jason Aldean‘s tour.
“When he heard it he said, ‘This is a hit. You have to do this song. This could be a really big song for you,'” Alaina recalls her husband sayingh. She was skeptical, because it’s sonically so different than anything she’s released.
He kept pressing. One day on the Aldean tour, he grabbed Matthew’s attention and played him the song. Then he urged Alaina to make it a duet.
“So literally Cameron is the reason that this song got put together, came out into the world,” she shares.
“All My Exes” is from an upcoming project. Find the lyrics below.
Lauren Alaina (Feat. Chase Matthews), “All My Exes” Lyrics:
Lauren Alaina:
Another bar, another fight / Another whiskey sippin’ déjà vu / Friday night, neon lights / Breakin’ up on Second Avenue / You say you’re feeling crazy / Trying to change me /
I don’t blame you / Trying to blame me / ‘Cause I’m hard to love and hard to let go / If it makes you feel better / Boy, you ain’t alone.
Chorus:
I ain’t saying that you’re right about me / I’m just sayin’ all my exes would agree / Scream my name as you’re walking out the door / Ain’t gonna lie, yeah, I heard it all before / I know I’m a little hard-headed / But baby, to your credit / You might be onto something tonight / No, I ain’t saying that you’re right about me / I’m just sayin’ all my exes would agree / I’m just sayin’ all my exes would agree.
Chase Matthews:
Rough and rowdy, ain’t no doubt about me / I can throw ’em back like the boys in Nashville / Another name in my phone / That I should leave but I won’t / If I’m going downtown it’s going downhill / Crazy, trying to change me / I don’t blame you / For trying to blame me / ‘Cause I’m hard to love and hard to let go / But if it makes you feel better girl, you ain’t alone.
Repeat Chorus
Oh oh / It ain’t nothing I ain’t never heard before / Oh oh / Same story, just a different slamming door.
Repeat Chorus
