This week, Khruangbin celebrated the 10th anniversary of their debut LP, The Universe Smiles On You in a unique fashion. The dynamic trio from Texas relived the moment by re-recording the ten tracks from the album in the same barn in Texas where they originally recorded it. The new release, called The Universe Smiles Upon You ii, includes the original tracks in a slightly different order.
The Universe Smiles Upon You ii Track List
“Little Joe and Mary ii”
“Balls and Pins ii”
“White Gloves ii”
“The Man Who Took My Sunglasses ii”
“People Everywhere ii”
“Bin Bin ii”
“August Twelve ii”
“Dern Kala ii”
“Two Fish and an Elephant ii”
“Zionsville ii”
Khruangbin, known for their vibey, mostly instrumental soul-funk sound, has achieved significant success since the album’s launch, with millions of streams and prominent performances at numerous music festivals. Last year, they received a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and even performed at the awards show.
I caught their headlining set this summer at Mountain Jam, where they filled the mountain with vibrant grooves and funk through their creative jams and contagious stage presence. This unique trio featuring Laura Lee Ochoa, Mark Speer, and Donald “DJ” Johnson serenaded the crowd and is one of the more unique and dynamic acts in the game.
Khruangbin is currently on a US tour doing a series of sold out shows, and no doubt, a vibe worth catching live.
