Review: Skindred @ The Picturedrome, Holmfirth

Holmfirth. A quiet little Yorkshire town. Full of scenic walks, and beautiful old architecture. A lovely little place for a Skindred concert, wouldn’t you think?

Well, that’s just what happened last night! Skindred rocked along to The Picturedrome, in the very centre of Holmfirth. Along with their guests As December Falls and DeadWax, it was a night to remember!

Local to Holmfirth, DeadWax were first up. An alternative grime group, they were full of energy and set the mood for the whole night. Taking the crowd from a statue-like-state, to moving and singing along with their fast-paced tracks and non-stop crowd interactions, I’ve found myself coming away a fan.

I unfortunately didn’t catch any track names, but they have just released a self-titled EP, and they do have more music to come at the end of the year! They’re definitely one to check out.

Next up was As December Falls. Another high-energy act, the pop punk quad are a band that I’ve tried to see before without success. I was quite excited to watch them, and they didn’t disappoint. We got to experience slightly older tracks such as I Don’t Feel Like Feeling Good, and then hits from their latest album like Join the Club and Carousel.

The crowd were now fully warmed up, and it was time for the main event…

Of course, Skindred didn’t kill the mood. Hyping us all up with AC/DC’s Thunderstruck and taking the stage through a dubstep remix of the Imperial March, the anticipation was rising and rising – before they finally began Set Fazers.

Benji Webbe is one of the strongest frontmen I’ve had the pleasure of seeing live, with constant jokes throughout the set and through his showmanship. He never stops dancing, and he accompanies it with flamboyant outfits that match the songs. Clearly, though, the full experience comes from the whole band!

Skindred has an incredible range of sound and promote nothing but love and encouragement. Encouragement to be yourself, and to do what you want. It’s such a positive atmosphere, I really feel like everyone should go to just one of their shows. Mind, though, The Picturedrome is a smaller venue, and it did seem like the whole of standing were in the mosh pits.

Skindred performed all the songs that we all love. They did the beloved World’s on Fire and Rat Race. They divided the crowd up to sing along to That’s My Jam, creating the “Skindred Choir of Holmfirth”. They performed a few tracks from their newest album, tracks such as If I Could, Gimme That Boom and L.O.V.E (Smile Please). For a grand finale, they covered Electric Avenue, and then involved everyone in the Newport helicopter for Warning.

This is my second time seeing Skindred, and I’m just as happy as I was before, if not happier. As I said before, I would recommend them to anyone. Even if the music is not for you – it’s a nice atmosphere, and you might surprise yourself with how much you enjoy it.
