REVIEW: Counterparts – Heaven Let Them Die

Counterparts released their latest EP Heaven Let Them Die in November and it’s a good one!

It wastes no time in kicking off with a high pitched screech making way for some brutal instrumentation for A Martyr Left Alive. The respite in the middle is quite haunting before Brendan’s screams pave the way for the brutality to resume.

To Hear of War’s bassline is fantastically brutal and the drums are intense and I love it, especially as it goes into the breakdown on “to collect the crowns of undeserving saints.

Closing with the titular track, Counterparts have a slower and more melodic introduction which continues as an underlying instrumentation as the rest of the song kicks in.

The instrumentation throughout is great. The powerful drums stand out and work well with the heavy bass whilst the guitars stand out most in the lighter moments. The drums and bass really shine in No Artery Intact.

Brendan’s vocals are angsty throughout and this matches not only the instrumentation but also the lyrics really well. Some of the lyrics are extremely in your face including the likes of No Lamb Was Lost’s opening “Dissect the swinging jaws from mouths that call upon them.

Counterparts have a great, brutal EP in more ways than one. If you’re a fan, you’ll love this. If you’re into aggressive music, then you’ll also love it. The band said they’re at their heaviest in Heaven Let Them Die and they’re truly right.
