MJ Lenderman, Sun June, and More Cover Jason Molina Songs for New Tribute Album

MJ Lenderman, Sun June, Hand Habits, Advance Base, Friendship, Horse Jumper of Love, Runnner, and others are on a new album dedicated to the late Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co. singer-songwriter Jason Molina. The album, I Will Swim to You: A Tribute to Jason Molina, is out September 5, via Run for Cover, and it finds the artists covering songs from across the Molina discography. Below, listen to Lenderman’s take on The Magnolia Electric Co.’s “Just Be Simple” and Sun June’s cover of the Trials & Errors entry “Leave the City.”

The new compilation’s title comes from a line on “Lioness,” which Hand Habits covered for the album. “Many try to walk the line between melancholic honesty and poetic affluence and fall short,” Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy said in a press statement, “but Jason Molina’s raw articulate devastation goes unparalleled.”

A portion of proceeds from I Will Swim to You: A Tribute to Jason Molina will benefit the nonprofit MusiCares.
