Review: Really Big Really Clever – …huh

Really Big Really Clever are set to release their second album …huh towards the end of August. And, despite never hearing them before, I knew exactly what to expect going into an album.

Being described as an album with ‘scuzzed-up riffs and raucous melody’, and being of an indie genre, it’s quite easy to estimate the sound of the album. I could expect chugging, slightly distorted guitars and bored-sounding vocals, and tracks that are hard to distinguish. I was right. I found it hard to fully indulge in the music, but I didn’t hate it.

There are 12 tracks to …huh, that all fit my description. Some tracks, like The Middle and Back and Forth teased something more but ultimately let me down. They are well-written tracks, though, there’s just a specific audience for it and I’m not a part of it. The album does contain some great riffs and solos, and I can’t fault the rhythm section at all. It’s almost, at times, like a punky surf-rock album, and there are some creative uses of sampling. It’s not a bad album; it’s just not my cup of tea.

Really Big Really Clever are set to release …huh on August 22, and set off for a little tour mid-September. Have a listen, see if it’s for you. Go support them if you like what you hear!
