How Jakob Nowell Is Reviving Sublime’s Musical Legacy

This summer, the legendary band Sublime took to the road once again with a tour that ended at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, CT, where I had the fortunate opportunity to experience their renaissance first hand. In addition, Sublime is headed back on the road this week, and will join the CBS’ The Today Show on Monday, Sept. 15.

Sublime is best known for their signature mix of reggae, ska, and punk rock. Stepping into the spotlight was Jakob Nowell, the son of the iconic late lead singer, Bradley Nowell, whose vibe and voice are clearly part of his strong genes from his dad. This exciting next chapter for Sublime beautifully connected the past while holding onto the infectious, high energy live show.

A Celebration of Legacy

Since their formation in 1988, Sublime has captivated audiences with their innovative, genre-bending sound. Their self-titled album, released in 1996, became a cultural smash, gifting us timeless hits like “What I Got,” “Santeria,” and “Wrong Way.” Sadly, the band’s trajectory changed with the heartbreaking loss of Bradley Nowell in 1996, just before they reached the peaks of their success. Yet, Sublime’s musical legacy has continued to resonate, influencing countless artists and nurturing a loyal fanbase, and now experiencing a new life under the new frontman, Jakob Nowell.

A New Frontman, Same Dope Vibes

Jakob Nowell, raised in a family where music was always a part of life, stepped into his father’s role with kinetic energy and a sincere desire to honor that legacy. Fans were filled with excitement, curious to see how Jakob would bring his own flair to the beloved classics while weaving in his artistic voice, and the connection to their roots is undeniable. Jakob has his own band as well, Jakob’s Castle, also touring and playing gigs in between his time with Sublime.

“I grew up listening to Sublime every day,” Jakob expressed in a recent interview. “When I step on stage, I not only connect with my dad, but I also feel thrilled to introduce something new and exciting.”

New Single Out Now

With new frontman, Sublime is back making new music, and released Ensenada.  Since release, the single boasts more than 1 million music video views on YouTube, and nearly 7 million streams.  It is true to form for the band with edgy lyrics, catchy hooks, and total vibes.

It is rare that a band can capture the magic of its roots three decades later, but Sublime, with frontman and son of late lead singer, Jakob Nowell, this band is prepared for another epic liftoff.
