REVIEW – YAKKIE – Kill the Cop Inside Your Head

New album Kill the Cop Inside Your Head fits as an early Valentine’s present from YAKKIE.

Out on February 13, Kill the Cop Inside Your Head is an album that takes you on a journey. Or many journeys. Journeys through emotions, decades and society’s issues. YAKKIE is a DIY punk supergroup, made up of Janey Starling, Robin Gatt, Laura Ankles, and Maeve Westall.

They’re a group of girls with a lot to say, and they don’t mess around with how they’re saying it. The music treks through 70s punk and sprinkles a little bit of 90s pop in areas but addresses modern issues. There’s a lot of anger, with sadness but Under the Pavement is Beach ends with a hopeful flair that’s seemingly misplaced.

It’s an album where I could name each song, and list what I like. Beginning with the title track which throws you right into the deep end. Atlas breaks up the anger with outright melancholy. The use of instrumentation creates a mystery flair for Secrets. It’s a very smart, creative album. My favourite track is Right of Reply. It’s a track that hits hard. Aiming to call out injustice and asking for women’s safety. Well, not asking… demanding.

I like an album with a message, and YAKKIE‘s message in Kill the Cop Inside Your Head is strong. It’s clear and concise. I’m looking forward to the official release on February 13
