Shelf Lives will release debut album Hypernormal on February 25.
I’ve not really listened to much electro punk and at first I wasn’t sure if I would like this but I was pleasantly surprised.
I don’t quite think it’s my genre but from the opening of 2phoneS to the closing tone deF, there were plenty of bits that I enjoyed.
The opener had a nice hook “2phoneS but I don’t look at either” – I wish that was true but sadly it’s not. The sound effects work well too.
60K has some relatable lyrics including “bitches don’t know me, they really wanna own me just so they can own me, no no no please, low key, I don’t need the money, I’d rather cut my tongue than let a boy control me.” And the innocence in the vocal delivery is fab.
baby sonG reminded me a lot of MIA with the vocal delivery and instrumental undertones. I think it’s my favourite of the tracks too.
666 (PVA)’s instrumentation was the best of the album but the lyrics were a bit lacking for me.
It is a good album, but I felt for the most part, the instrumental was really similar throughout and it was the lyrics and vocal deliveries that made the tracks stand out alongside the sound effects.
I think someone who has more appreciation for the genre would definitely love the album.
