Country-pop star Kacey Musgraves is back and tipping her cowboy hat as she announces a new album. Her seventh album, Middle of Nowhere, is out May 1 via Lost Highway. Leading the record is the single “Dry Spell” and its cheeky music video co-directed by Musgraves and Hannah Lux Davis, in which she roams a grocery store with amorous thoughts and fantasizes about hooking up with one of the employees. Check out that new song below.
Middle of Nowhere is Musgraves’ seventh studio album and follow-up to 2024’s Deeper Well. She wrote the record to process the ample creative time that arose when exiting the dating pool and, instead, “leaning into” herself while living across Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico. Helping her out along the way are Willie Nelson, Miranda Lambert, Billy Strings, and Gregory Alan Isakov, who all have guest features on the album.
“The bulk of this record was made during the longest single period of my life,” said Musgraves. “I found that for the first time, it actually felt incredible being alone and existing in a space not defined by anyone else. I became fascinated with the concept of liminal space, both geographical and emotional. We don’t linger in these transitional, empty spaces long enough and rush to define where or whatever is next. I became so at ease with being in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in many senses and sitting in the un-comfort of the undefined.”
Musgraves returns to the microphone after scooping up another Grammy Award to add to her shelf last year. She took home Best Country Song for “The Architect,” bringing her total tally of wins up to eight. Last month, she praised the 2026 Album of the Year winner Bad Bunny after his invigorating Super Bowl Halftime Show, too.
