Carpenter Brut released new album Leather Temple on February 27.
The record begins with crashing drums and a church organ sound for Ouverture (Deus Ex Machina), and then the organ builds in intensity before the drums come back. It’s an interesting start to an album for sure and really creates an atmosphere that has me wanting to listen to more.
Major Threat brings in the 80s style electro but goes it a rocky kick and despite my preference for songs with lyrics, I am quite invested in the track.
The titular track is darker and quite funky and She Rules the Ruins has a spooky intro which sounds really cool before building into intensity and I can imagine it being used over a movie scene where the protagonist is being chased – probably through some ruins.
Neon Requiem is like a time capsule, it really captures all the sounds of the 80s and sounds like something that would come as the theme for one of those 80s buddy cop shows.
I hadn’t properly listened to Carpenter Brut prior to this so was surprised with how much I enjoyed an instrumental album, especially one so heavily leaning into electronic elements.
But it has a spooky vibe that had me bopping along and really enjoying the mix of electro and an almost power-metal sound. The drums work well with the synths.
