REVIEW – Hiraki & Meejah – Interwoven

Danish alternative bands Hiraki and Meejah will release Interwoven, a conceptual collaborative EP on March 13 through Pelagic Records.

It begins with an atmospheric guitar line and some haunting vocals in Redirect Revenge. The vocal delivery from Mai Soon Young Øvlisen is beautifully melodic, even as the intensity from the drums and bass ramps up. Her voice is absolutely stunning.

Preserve Manifest and All Contrast are much more angsty, with more screamy vocals and punky sound. The latter also has some funky instrumentation.

The description for the EP says that the collaboration forced Meejah to go darker and heavier and Hiraki to branch out more experimentally and with longer tracks, and the opener Redirect Revenge certainly is a longer track, sitting in at more than eight minutes long. But it’s done well and worth every second.

I have to admit, I was not familiar with either Hiraki or Meejah before listening to the EP but I will be checking out their individual works as I really enjoyed the contrast between the melodic and heavier moments that both bands bring to the table here.
