Monaleo is back with “Crossroads Freestyle,” her first song since releasing Who Did the Body last year. The 24-year-old rapper immediately locks into a quick flow while dolled up in a pink dress and riding a pastel convertible, channeling her inner Barbie as she stares down her birthday next week and, with it, a new batch of wishes and hopeful milestones. It’s been almost exactly half a year since Monaleo dropped Who Did the Body, a comparatively long time for her pretty quick turnaround rate with new music. That’s in part because she took a hiatus due to a sudden medical emergency. “I’m listening to my doctors and taking it one step at a time,” she wrote when sharing the news on social media. “The surgery went well and I’ll be taking some time away while I’m recovering. To everyone who’s been at the shows screaming every word, wearing the merch, posting the videos, and making this the most incredible chapter of my career so far, I love you.”
The Houston rapper experienced her first viral hit back in 2021 with “Beating Down Yo Block” when she was still a teenager. It was also the beginning of Monaleo’s pink aesthetic, which she’s proudly kept going on her debut album Where the Flowers Don’t Die and the follow-up Throwing Bows EP.
