The Roots’ Questlove Shares Trailers for New Sly Stone and Saturday Night Live Documentaries: Watch


Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson is the director of two new documentaries, Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) and Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music, and they both have newly released trailers. Watch the videos below.

Questlove’s Sly Stone documentary premiered yesterday (January 23) at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. The film, about the funk icon and his band, features appearances from D’Angelo, Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Outkast’s André 3000, and others. Sly Lives! (aka The Burden of Black Genius) will stream on Hulu, beginning on Thursday, February 13.

Questlove co-directed Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music with Oz Rodriguez. The trailer teases contributions from the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, Dua Lipa, Miley Cyrus, Jack White, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, and more. The movie premieres, on NBC, on January 27 and will stream on Peacock the following day.

The Sly Stone and Saturday Night Live documentaries are Questlove’s first major film works since his beloved directorial debut, Summer of Soul. The Roots drummer is also due to direct a new remake of The Aristocats.
